North Puget Sound Progressive League Week 1 Recap (April 11, 2019)

Just like in the cartoon, Obi-Wan prevails again!

Welcome to the week one recap for the North Puget Sound Progressive League!

The first event was buzzing with anticipation; 11 people showed up at Zulu’s Board Game Cafe to kick off the league. Each player received six booster packs to combine with a General Grievous or Obi-Wan Kenobi Starter to form their deck. Out of the 66 opened booster packs, league players pulled an impressive count of 12 legendaries. One person was even fortunate enough to claim a Palpatine – Unlimited Power and a Chewbacca – The Beast in their first two packs. Thirty minutes of scrambling then ensued as players attempted to put together decks.

We had decided to have a few rules that differed somewhat from other progressive or escalation style leagues. For one thing, players were not allowed to build with both both hero and villain cards in their decks (except where specified by card text), unlike in typical drafts. Additionally, decks were required to contain exactly 30 cards. These rules ended up pushing some folks to play hero even though they’d rather play villain, or forcing players to add a character they didn’t want just to access another color and have sufficient cards for their deck! We also allowed eObi-Wan Kenobi after hearing that other stores had not been allowing both of his dice in drafts or sealed.

Character pairings played in week one included:

What a great character for Grievous’ ability!

We had a near perfect split between hero and villain, with six and five decks being played, respectively. Everyone had a three die start, except the one person who fortuitously opened a Sentinel Messenger

Unfortunately, due to time constraints, we were only able to get in three rounds of Swiss (instead of the planned four). Despite that, the close games and exciting victories (and losses) sparked a thrilling first week for the league, and we’d like to give a big ‘thank you’ to everyone who made it happen.

Current League Standings:

  1. Ethan – 9 Points
  2. Cameron – 9 Points
  3. Zack – 7 Points
  4. AJ – 7 Points
  5. Jacob – 7 Points
  6. Anthony – 6 Points
  7. Daniel – 5 Points
  8. Stephanie – 5 Points
  9. Reuben – 4 Points
  10. Jonathan – 4 Points
  11. Bianca – 3 Points

Remember, it’s not too late to join! New players will be allowed to buy additional packs at their first event to “catch up” to the rest of the league. Also, stay tuned for rule updates following the release of Allies of Necessity. Our next event will be on Thursday, April 25. Special thanks to Zulu’s for hosting and supporting us!
